"Gangster for Life" Mavado - in Cleveland - Sell Off! (As if you didn't know...)

(After a few no so happy emails, this story has a edits. Bashy in all her bashyness, made a small faux pas, reported MAVADO came to the stage at about 2AM - WRONG, Bashy! As some of your comments, on and off line stated, Mavado did take the stage at the expected 4am! But all in all, it still was a good show, wouldn't you agree?)

If you were one of the few unfortunate ones to miss Sample Jack’s 3rd Anniversary Bash featuring “Gangster for Life” Mavado at the Club Center, let’s just say you probably missed one of the biggest stage shows to come to Cleveland. Yes, we loved Baby Cham and were blown away by the performance of Luciano, but since this artist is considered one of the hottest on the scene right now, his arrival in Cleveland was pure madness.

The masses turned out in spite of the not so eventful weather, the (what some considered)steep $30 + at the gate and of course the unknowing feeling of when and exactly who would take the stage. Chat ‘Bout had first hand info that Mavado had arrived in Cleveland for the show, but there were no Queen Paula or Macka Diamond as announced (who were supposed to substitute for Ce’Cile, as advertised on the flyers). But can you imagine what time we would have seen Mavado take the stage after Sunshade and Hard Stone performed THEN Macka Diamond and Queen Paula took to the stage? Whew! Even later than 4:00 maybe?

As showtime approached, Cleveland’s favorite MC, KC Platinum, alongside Marc Dragon, prepared the crowd for the stage show with a few tunes, salutations and announcement. The crowd was ready as KC came with his signature, “Are you ready for Showtime?” Hardstone worked the masses as he performed the tune “Get up, get up” to amp up the already eager crowd. Check out the artist, Hardstone at
www.myspace.com/hardstone.

After a few more crowd teasers compliments of KC Platinum, Mavado took to the stage at about 4am. Tattletale and I could immediately feel the rise of the energy levels of the place. We also spotted a sea of digital cameras and cell phones taking pictures and videos of the performer. (Sorry, Night Ryder, but WE all are photographers tonight!)

So, okay, was it me or were you all surprised at Mavado’s size? With such a strong voice and even stronger content, I was expecting someone who was a least, say, 5’10, maybe? But I must say I was loving his designer casual look as he sported a long sleeve T-Shirt and Jeans by Christian Audigier (you know, Ed Hardy’s more expensive cousin?). Not to mention the blingin’ platinum and diamond chain and the bracelets…….

Overall Mavado gave the crowd a great performance as he sang all the tunes to get the crowd moving, from “Don’t Cry” and “Gully Side” to “Top Shotta Nah Miss” and “Last Night” the crowd never missed a beat until… oops, it appeared to Mavado that Marc Dragon dropped – a few. Mavado was more than irritated with a few things that went down in Cleveland and unfortunately Marc Dragon was one of them. Mavado seemed to stop the tunes as least 3 times in order to supposedly get the selector together since he felt Marc Dragon ‘doesn’t listen.’ (WOW!) By the time Mavado closed out the performance with “Dying” the crowd was more than satisfied and continued to party to the sounds of New Horizon until a mere 6am.

Although Chat ‘Bout was completely feeling this show, we were able to spot a few dancehall celebrities in the crowd. Hot Boys Dylan, Dennis, and Blacka, the God Bless Crew, Lady Spyda, Maggie and Sharon Untouchable, The Designing Women Crew, The Blaze Crew, Leisa Engel and DJ Chubby.

Big Up to Sample Jack for another great event in Cleveland! Happy 3rd Anniverary as well!

And just because Chat ‘Bout is so nice…. Here are a few pics, enjoy!

7 days and counting - Gangster for Life comes to Cleveland!!!!!!

Can you feel it? In just 7 days, it’s all about Sample Jack’s 3rd year anniversary HUGE bash featuring MAVADO! This dance is a guarantee SELL OFF! As the masses promise to pour in from the likes of Columbus, Cincinnati, The ‘Burgh, and even Chicago (according to chicagoreggae.com message boards!). To take in Cleveland’s most anticipated event.

This will be Mavado’s first (and hopefully not last) appearance in Cleveland and the vibes were building about this bash from December. This bashment gal is scouring the (finest, of course) shoe stores for a pair of comfy, cute shoes that will be bas
ment worthy for a night (and day) of dancing and some hot tunes!

Adding to this hot ticket alongside The Real McCoy' is Dancehall Artist and Author of “Bun Him” - Jamaica’s first Dancehall novel (available on www.sangstersbooks.com is Macka Diamond with her hot tune also entitled, “Bun Him” and Queen Paula with hits such as ‘Dem Girl Sittin’ and ‘Dismiss’. One cannot have an event such as this without the sounds of New Horizon (all 30 of them), and of course, Sample Jack featuring Mix Master Fatti Ranks, Slaughter and KC Platinum playing double duty as soundman and the MC for the evening. (‘Are you ready for Showtime?’) And if that is not enough, the masses will also be blessed by the sounds of Cleveland’s own, Sunshade and Hard Love. So needless to say, Cleveland, this will definitely be an event that goes on to sunrise!

It all goes down at (where else?) The Club Center, located at 8800 Woodland Avenue. The flyer suggests an early arrival to avoid inflation, since it’s $30 BEFORE midnight! Chat ‘Bout can definitely see prices at the gate going to about $40 or even $50!

What can you expect? Check out a few performances by Queen Paula from Sting, Macka Diamond - free styling on the Gangster for Life riddim (appropriate) and of course M A V A D O ! ! ! ! ! at His Birthnite bash in December. Enjoy!

And see you there! But if you miss this one – you can read all about it here – but, why would you want to do that? (Miss this bash that is….)

Gone but not Forgotten - The Cotton Club

“Gone…” were the first words I heard on the other end. “What’s gone?” I asked.

“The Cotton Club, girl” says Tattletale, “The Cotton Club is officially torn down!”

“What????!” It finally sunk in.

After a long sigh, and a few screams, the reminiscing began.

I still remember the first time I went to the Cotton Club, it was for birthnight bash, I think. This guy told me about a party that night and I was going to ‘drop in’ to maybe check it out – since I was in the neighborhood and all. (I lived WAY across town). I knew what to expect from my Dad’s Hall days but I trying to convince my entourage that in spite of the looks (and the location); it would definitely be worth the $20 the guy at the door was asking. With some urging and some extra cash, I made my way in and a bashment gal was born! Fast forward a few years later and The Cotton Club became a place in which I ‘dropped in’ more often….

Still in denial, I drove to the site to see for myself. I looked at the hole that used to be the club’s basement and I chuckled as I remembered the near misses on those killer steps to the bathroom. I wondered how many scraped heels, ankles and egos met their demise on those damn things. With the combination of stiletto heels and Alize’ (don’t ask, it was a long time ago), It’s a wonder I never met that same fate.

I drove around to the parking lot, along that same route I took to the dances and paused as I can still remember how excited I used to get when the cars met me around the corner and heard the bass booming from the bash. Like any dance, the parking lot was a gauge of how the dance would be. If the lot was full and parking spilled out onto Miles and its side streets, you can believe the dance sell off! (The most ram dance that still holds the record was the bash featuring Sean Paul in 2002. I don’t think I ever remember having to park on a side street off 135th!)

In true stalker fashion, I pulled a little closer to the site and more dancehall memories kicked in….. The time when Elephant Man made a hasty exit from the stage courtesy of a gunshot….The stellar performance of Capelton regardless of the stench of mace in the air…. A very energetic Lady Spyder winning a 20 inch color TV by making it a part of her routine….The stage banner with the BIG green Bee with the words “Green Team” at all of their dances….. (sigh) the list of great times at the Cotton Club could go on…

I called my bashment buddy as I turned out the parking (for the last time) and said,
“Gone”.

“Yeah, girl, GONE.”

What do you remember about the Beautiful and Spacious Cotton Club? Hit us up –

A little more then I am now,

It's almost here! Stone Love arrives in Cleveland on January 26th!

Chat 'Bout Cleveland has dubbed 2008 as 'The Battle of Dancehall Promoter' as we eagerly await the first round with the arrival of The Immortal Stone Love on Saturday, January 26th for Blacka’s birthnite bash, an evening called ‘Betta Must Come’.

Cleveland’s premier sounds will be on hand for the bash including Sample Jack (with KC and Lava), New Horizon (all of them), and Organik Sound featuring DJ Chubby and Leisa Engel. If you missed Blacka’s bash at Dailey’s last year with an impromptu appearance by Sizzla (Yes, at Dailey’s!) Then who KNOWS what this year’s bash will bring…

As many years as we have come to enjoy Stone Love at the dances (some more years than others!), Chat ‘Bout decided to list a few facts about the sound that we have all come to Love….
-For the past 35 years, the sound has set itself apart from all others in the industry, with its unique pattern of playing, standards, rules and the overall quality of the music played.
-Stone Love was started in 1972 by Winston Powell.
-The current selectors are; Wee Pow, Rory, Geefus, Billy Slaughter, Diamond, Ice Berg, Dwayne Pow and Fire Ras.
-Most recent accomplishments include becoming the first sound to start advertising ourselves on trucks, the first sound to be broadcast on an airline (Air Jamaica), first sound to be signed with a label, first sound to be endorsed and sponsored by a corporate company first Rum Cream, then Guinness and now Magnum.
So, if STILL haven’t had the pleasure of enjoying this sound after THREE DECADES on the scene – then we will definitely check you on the 26th at the Club Center!
It’s a New Year and I’m Still –

Bashment Review: Dailey's Customer Appreciation Bash

If Saturday’s Customer Appreciation Bash at Dailey’s Blue Mountain Inn is any indication of what is in store for 2008, then this year will be full of can’t miss events! The dance sell off as the masses flocked to Dailey’s for the first Bash of the new year….

As Chat ‘Bout made our usual fashionably late appearance at about 1:30, the vibes were coming through the door as the sounds of New Horizon blazed the latest tunes from Busy Signal, Macka Diamond and Munga. The crowd was feeling the tunes as the men and women moshed up the dance floor. New Horizon Monk soon turned the tunes over to who he referred to as a pioneer, KC Platinum from Sample Jack. KC Platinum always has a way of taking control of the crowd by cooling them down with tunes like ‘We Are the World’ (no, really) and ‘I’m Alive’ by Celine Dion only to crank the crowd back up with white hot tunes such as Duffel Bag Boy Riddim featuring Mavado.

It was good to see the people out and about enjoying themselves at Dailey’s once again. Saturday’s bash reiterates the fact that Dailey’s has been and will be the nucleus of West Indian Culture in Cleveland. The dance was full of great vibes and this reporter certainly hopes it will continue through 2008 and beyond.

(
Okay, okay, there was a minor altercation at the bash but trust me it was quickly handled – and I DO mean handled! I don’t think I have ever seen a covert operation take place as quickly as security (and others) disposed of Ms. Don’t–push- me–even-though-I’m-in-a –crowded-ass-club-so-now-I-want-to-fight. Peace out, fool! Now back to the tunes…)

Also in the crowd enjoying the vibes were Maggie Untouchable of course sans Sharon and Jodi, Ms. Trini, 88.7 DJ Chubby, 1/3 of the Designing Women Crew, Ocean Wave Eye (loving that peach suit, boy!), Dailey’s Heir Apparent, Huey, Flava Unit Nicholai and Brother Dylan, Blacka – reminding the masses of his HUGE birthnite bash, and of course, Mr. Promoter Himself, Makka B.

I really don’t know what I enjoyed most about this bash – was it the free admission (or in our case, $2), the return of the vibes, the hot tunes, the giveaways (coffee maker, vacuum cleaner, smoothie maker, or roaster) courtesy of Maggie and Mr. Dailey or was it the impromptu dance off courtesy of Monk and Makka B? If you missed Monk’s moves, trust me – you just had to be there! All I can say is -Wowwwww!

That being said, Chat ‘Bout is fully bashment ready for 2008. Starting with Blacka’s Birthnite Bash (can you say that 5 times fast?) with Stone Love on January 26th, followed by Makka B’s night featuring Bass Odyssey on February 2nd, all getting ready for one of the hottest events of Cleveland’s dancehall scene – M A V A D O- coming February 22nd! Chat ‘Bout has also heard a few murmurs of some great events coming in March such as Huey’s dance featuring Glamour Wayne and who can forget KC Platinum’s Birthnite bash?

Other promoters are promising some BIG things in the New Year. So I guess we will have to wait and see!

Must get some ‘fits for these events so I be-

Chat 'Bout Year in Review: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly.....

Happy 2008! 8 is the number of new beginnings we at Chat 'Bout Cleveland are looking forward to the beginning of possiblilities in 2008 (and beyond). In retrospect, here a wrap of our the year we left behind......

The Good: First Rastafarian wins Ms. Jamaica Universe title

Zahra Redwood, 25, is the first Rastafarian to win the competition on April 1, 2007 and represented Jamaica in the international finals in Mexico on May 28.
Following her historic victory: "I was just in absolute awe. I was elated, I was overwhelmed; it's a feeling I've never felt before, so everything that I'm saying is just a mere approximation to the emotions I was going through at that time."
As the proclamation came over the system, 'Zahra Redwood, Miss Jamaica 2007!' an African song played softly in the background and Cindy Wright, Miss Jamaica Universe 2006, balanced the large diamond crown on Miss Redwood's pinned locks.

The Good: George Bush proclaims Caribbean-American Heritage Month

PROCLAMATION BY THE PRESIDENT:
CARIBBEAN-AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH, 2006
THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press SecretaryFor Immediate Release June 5, 2006
CARIBBEAN-AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH, 2006- - - - - - -
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICAA PROCLAMATION

During Caribbean-American Heritage Month, we celebrate the great contributions of Caribbean Americans to the fabric of our Nation, and we pay tribute to the common culture and bonds of friendship that unite the United States and the Caribbean countries.

Our Nation has thrived as a country of immigrants, and we are more vibrant and hopeful because of the talent, faith, and values of Caribbean Americans. For centuries, Caribbean Americans have enriched our society and added to the strength of America. They have been leaders in government, sports, entertainment, the arts, and many other fields.

During the month of June, we also honor the friendship between the United States and the Caribbean countries. We are united by our common values and shared history, and I join all Americans in celebrating the rich Caribbean heritage and the many ways in which Caribbean Americans have helped shape this Nation.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2006 as Caribbean-American Heritage Month. I encourage all Americans to learn more about the history of Caribbean Americans and their contributions to our Nation.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this fifth day of June, in the year of our Lord two thousand six, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirtieth.

GEORGE W. BUSH

The Good: Captain Barrington Irving, Jr

Barrington A. Irving, Jr., an aerospace student at Florida Memorial University, and reportedly the youngest person and first black person and first Jamaican American to pilot a plane around the world solo.
Irving was born in Jamaica, and grew up in the Miami, Florida area.
Irving started his journey on March 23, 2007 in the Opa-locka Airport located near Miami, planning to complete the trip in 41 days. His airplane, a Columbia 400, is named the "Inspiration", and was assembled by himself using over $300,000 in donated parts.
The first two stops on his itinerary were Cleveland and Long Island.
On June 27, 2007, Irving completed his flight around the world, after 95 days of travel, making him the youngest, and first Jamacian American to complete a solo flight around the world.
Irving turned down multiple football scholarship offers with his sights set on aviation. He later founded Experience Aviation, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering minority youth to pursue careers in aviation.

The Bad: Jamaica's female prime minister struggling

When Portia Simpson Miller became their first female Prime Minister, Jamaicans celebrated in the streets, hailing "Sista P" as a warmhearted champion of the poor.
Months later, much of her support had dissipated. A scandal over a political donation from a European company and her failure to reduce crime had voters questioning her effectiveness. The homespun style many once found endearing had begun to work against her.
Beyond the donation scandal, Simpson Miller's administration failed to curb criminal violence, which many Jamaicans consider the country's most pressing problem. More than 1,000 people were murderered-- the third straight year that homicides have topped that number on the island of 2.6 million people.
With opponents urging her to call early elections, Simpson Miller risked becoming one of Jamaica's shortest-serving prime ministers since independence from Britain in 1962.
On September 3, 2007 her party narrowly lost the 2007 general election retaining 27 seats against the rival Jamaican Labour Party 's 33 seats. Simpson-Miller initially refused to concede defeat alleging voting irregularities and the possibility that recounts will change the final result. The Organization of American States issued a statement declaring the election free and fair. "I believe this election can stand international scrutiny," said OAS assistant secretary-general Albert Ramdin who led a team of international observers who monitored the election.

She conceded defeat on September 5, 2007. Then on September 11, Simpson Miller was succeeded as Prime Minister by JLP leader Bruce Golding.

The Bad: Montego Bay 'makes it rain' at the 11th annual Dancehall Queen Competition, forcing the promoters to rethink the format of future staging of the event.

Sections of the large crowd which turned out to see the event at Pier One pelted the stage with liquor bottles after the judges announced 26 year-old Canadian Maude Francato as the winner, forcing contestants, organizers and patrons to run for cover.
Martin expressed disappointment at what he said were the misguided actions of a minority of the audience, which succeeded in marring the event and scoffed at accusations by some patrons that they colluded with the judges to select Francato as the eventual winner.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time the highly controversial event, known for its raw, sexually suggestive dance routines, has been marred by violence. In 2005, the audience reacted in similar manner, rejecting the judges' choice and eventually choosing the now deceased Shanique Taylor as the winner. Ironically, Francato, who hails from Quebec City in Canada, and describes herself as a professional dancer, was a crowd favorite from the beginning.
Francato was the second Non Jamaican to win the Dancehall Queen title. The first was Junko, from Japan.

The Bad: Beenie Man and D'Angel
These two have had more of a soap opera year than Brittany. It’s been the type of drama we wouldn't wish on our worst enemies. From their short lived marriage, followed by the divorce petition, very public squabbles, mud-slinging and even a paternity test …(The inspiration behind the track, ‘Baby Father’ featuring Vybe Kartel?)! WHEW!
The 'King of the Dancehall' owes the government millions in taxes, and she keeps getting booed at stage shows. Together and apart, these two have been on a roller-coaster ride with no end in sight.

The Ugly: The murder of Lucky Dube
South African Reggae singer, Lucky Philip Dube (pronounced doo-bay) was killed in the Johannesburg suburb of Rosettenville shortly after dropping two of his seven children off at their uncle’s house on October 18, 2007. News of his murder has triggered outrage in the entertainment industry, and particularly in countries where Mr. Dube performed, including Jamaica.
Police reports suggest he was shot dead by
carjackers. Five men have been arrested in connection with the murder. He is survived by his wife, Zanele, and his seven children.
As a frontline artist in the reggae genre, Lucky's creativity and inventiveness kept growing.Compelling in his musicianship and intriguing in his lyrical content, Lucky's sonic daring to take his genre to new heights never failed to amaze even the most ardent fans, whilst reigning in new devotees to his magic every day.
What do you think? Link us up your hits and misses of 2007 at chat_bout_cleveland@hotmail.com!

Bashment Review: Makka B presents 'A Christmas Affair Bash'

Cleveland got an early Christmas present this year as Makka B hosted ‘A Christmas Bash Affair’ featuring Black Chiney straight from Miami this past Saturday. The crowd featured a mixture of dancehall veterans as well as a few new faces to Dailey’s Blue Mountain Inn, which seemed to create a unique vibe to this dance…..

Black Chiney kept the crowd moving with a variety of dancehall favs from artists like Mavado and Busy Signal. But in true Cleveland fashion, the crowd REALLY got hype on tunes such as Alicia Keys ‘No One’ and ‘I Get Money’ by 50 Cent. The crowd kicked into full hype mode as Selector Dinero tuned the masses in to the dancehall version of ‘Duffel Bag Boy’. The R&B/ Rap set was followed by a string of dancehall oldies which the crowd seemed to appreciate a little more… (Come on y’all – when are we going to UPGRADE?)

Soon the dance floor parted only to find a cutesy cutesy Ms. Karmen, from KarKell representing Minneapolis (loving the bow, ma!). This gal definitely made her entrance as she set the dance off with the Raging Bull. Big Up Karmen as she kept the party moving all night long. For more on Karmen from KarKell, log on to
www.myspace.com/charmenkarmenwithak.

In the crowd getting some holiday cheer were dancehall regulars, Maggie and Sharon Untouchable, Dylan (with a oh-so-cute date), the Designing Women Crew, Blacka, Star Temple Ricky Hype (getting ready for his 3 day birthday extravaganza reaching from Columbus to Cleveland), Family and Ms. Trini.

Yes, Makka B does it again as he keeps coming with great event after event for the masses this year. Who could forget his sell off Birthnite Bash, the emergence of Jiggy Fridays, and the dance featuring Tony Matterhorn? And with Bass Odyssey coming in 2008, who can stop you? Speaking of Bass Odyssey, what are YOU wearing?

Dear Santa, please bring the vibes back for Christmas…..

(***Big Sigh***)

Let’s just Chat ‘Bout Cleveland were somewhat disappointed at the Luciano turnout last weekend... and rumor has it - literally. All the rumors has the dancehall community up and out. As large and great as the Baby Cham show turned out the previous week, we just knew Luciano would bring the vibes and the masses to this event. Since it has been about 2 years since Jah Messenger had an appearance in Cleveland, I was sure this event would sell off, but it was quite the contrary..

Not taking anything away from his impeccable performance – worth the (long) wait, needless to say, Luciano always delivers and for those who were in attendance, not only gave the crowd a great show (with tunes ‘Sweep over my Soul’ and ‘It’s me Again, Jah’) Luciano, as always, sends the crowd with a feeling of purpose….

As we look forward to 2008 were just Chatting ‘Bout (ShamelessPlug) how the vibes were FINALLY returning to the scene and after a good two year run of great bashes and stageshows. (Remember, since the relocation of one Johnny Ouch & Crew) All the bashes all the themes, all that sell off - then damn.... ll Chat Bout wants for Christmas besides peace, blessings and prosperity is most importantly, the vibes to the dancehall scene. There are a lot of BIG Dances coming up in the next few weeks including Makka B’s Christmas Bash,

followed by Breed's Annual Birthnite Bash (featuring Makka Diamond) on January 1st, also in January we have Blacka BIG Birthnite Bash featuring Stone Love,

and (oh-my-Gucci) Movado in February. If that doesn’t have your bashment calendar for 2008 full, how about the Annual Pink and White Valentine’s Dance, and Huey's Big Bash with Glamour Wayne and Metro Media in March?
Okay, that’s enough bashment to get you to the Spring. So come on Cleveland, keep on with the good vibes, keep the fallen in your prayers, hope for the best and the vibes going! So before we get too down and out, Santa, please give the vibes back toCleveland's Dancehall Scene!

Bashment Review: Baby Cham in Cleveland! Pure Madness!!!!!!!

Well… where do we begin to tell you about the bash featuring Baby Cham AKA Cham at the Club Center last Saturday? Let’s start with if you missed it – SHAME ON YOU!! Not since the white hot bash this summer with Firelinks has the masses enjoyed themselves at this venue. We can all agree that Stone Love in August was (too damn) hot, Tony Matterhorn was cool, and what I can say about Baby Cham is that this bash was pure madness!

As Chat ‘Bout entered the Club Center at a fashionably late 2am, the bash was in full swing with partygoers feeling the tunes of the featured sounds Star Temple and of course the hosts of the evening, New Horizon. Sample Jack was soon to play as they introduced the crowd to some of their new dub plates and got the crowd hype for the featured artist. The MC of the evening, KC Platinum, kept all his gals in the crowd warmed up with the usual big ups to the hard working independent women, hair stylists, beautiful ladies, etc., etc,…..

Keeping the crowd on edge, performances from Willpower and Morning Star worked the audience for hypeness from Sparticus leading to Blacka as he bought the house down with his favorite tune, “Let It Be”. Chat ‘Bout could definitely feel the love from the crowd during his performance which adds even more anticipation to his HUGE birthnight bash next month, featuring Stone Love.

No faster than the crowd could answer the usual, “Are you ready for Showtime?”, on comes Cham to the stage immediately hitting the crowd with ‘Grounds Man’, followed by dancehall favorites such as ‘So Long Gal’, ‘Mek Jamaica feel proud’, and ‘Strange Things’. Soon Cham began calling for the longtime fans before gracing the crowd with tunes like, ‘Que Sara’ and ‘Suck Ya Mamma’. In true nostalgic fashion, reminiscent of my early dancehall days of Dad’s Hall, these tunes definitely caught me at a, ‘Damn-I-forgot-he-made-that-moment’. By the time he hit us with his recent set of tunes like, ‘Vitamin S’ and ‘Suicidal Mi Buumboclaat’, I’d forgiven him for not singing one of my favs, ‘Middle Finger’. But who cares? What he did sing (and I loved) was his collabo tunes, ‘Boom Boom’ – with out Rihanna (Thanks), ‘Tables will Turn’ and
‘This is Why I’m Hot’ without missing a beat. By the time Cham sang ‘Ghetto Story’, I, like the rest of the crowd was completely satisfied with the bash the contained more show and less dance – as we seemed to like it sometimes….

Although Chat ‘Bout noticed a lot of newbies in the crowd (on account of the Z 107.9 coverage – I’m sure), there were a few dancehall celebs in the crowd that usually come out to big dances. We immediately spotted Lady Sypda in alongside her long lost dance partner, Storm. The always in fashion God Bless Crew was answering the call of metallic – which seemed to be the ladies choice of attire the evening. Also in attendance were the Designing Women Crew, The Untouchable Crew, Maggie and Sharon, Breed, Leisa Engel, Ms. Trini, Ocean Wave Eye, and Marc Dragon. The blast from the past again goes to The Diamond Girls on the laid back and chill tip. Now that the scene is getting back to where it used to be, something tells me that we will be seeing a lot more of den girls that once fade make a comeback in 2008……

Big Up to New Horizon - excuse me, New Horizon Productions for keeping a NICE dance with great vibes and even better tunes. Keep it up fellas! Definitely looking forward to the Couples dance on the 15th. It is sure to be interesting – to say the least!

Keep it coming Cleveland!

Bashment Review: John Hype in Cleveland - Sell Off!

Just when you though the vibe in Cleveland was gone - it was the boys turn to show out on the dance floor as Flava Unit Nick and Sample Jack Promotions presents “A Night of Music and Dancing” last Saturday, November 10th. This dance was a sell off as the masses gathered to see John Hype – the man who bought us ‘Signal di Plane’ and ‘Pon di River’ live. We also wanted to see his newest dance craze, ‘The Gully Side’.

As Chat’ Bout arrived to the dance at a fashionable 2am, the parking was insane as it took a while to find a place to park (where is valet when you need it??!!). The anticipation rose as we finally entered the dance and we could feel the energy of the event. The crowd was going crazy as they watched John Hype along with Cleveland’s own dancehall celebrities, Blacka, Makka B, Flava Unit Nick and brother Dylan mash up the place serving up all the latest dances delivered by the man of the hour, John Hype.

The crowd was definitely feeling the dancing vibe as Chat ‘Bout was able to spot many dancehall honies arrive in flat shoes and tennis as they determined this was a night about dancing….

Also feeling the vibes were Maggie Untouchable – fully recovered from her HOT birthnite bash the week before, The Designing Women Crew, The Blaze’ Crew, Eye (Ocean Wave), Leisa Engel and DJ Chubby (loving that Blazer and pocket chain look!). In attendance to represent for the Cleveland Dancehall Queens were Destiny, Lady Spyda (head first!), Ms. Brandi and Ms. Trini in the house to get some vibes in the dance floor. A few blasts from the pasts – Diamond Girls (we caught them at Maggie’s dance as well) and Missy (alongside The Designing Women Crew). Even The Big Man himself, Mr. Dailey was in the place mingling with the crowd and feeling the vibes….

We can all admit the 2007 has been a great year for the dancehall scene in Cleveland. The resurgence of Cleveland’s newest promoters with their determination to shred the ‘country’ Cleveland image will surely make 2008 even hotter! Thanks again to all the masses that came out with their energy to make this ANOTHER great dance! Keep it coming as we get ready for Baby Cham on December 1st and the ever so blazin’ hot Birthnite Bash for Blacka featuring Stone Love on January 26th!

'A Night of Music & Dancing' - Cleveland gets HYPE - This Saturday!!!!!

It’s all about Flava Unit and Sample Jack Promotions as they present ‘A Night of Music & Dancing’ on Saturday, November 10th at Dailey’s Blue Mountain Inn. The dance features John Hype, the originator of several dances such as ‘Signal di Plane’, ‘Fan dem off’ and his latest dance mashing up Jamaica’s dancehall scene, ‘The Gully Side’.

This will definitely be a must see event as the flyer is calling out all dancers to test their skills with the #1 dancer straight out of Jamaica……

Born Jonathan Prendergast, aka John Hype. Stage named by "Firelinks",John Hype has been revolutionizing the dancehall game with his edgy creativity and dancing savvy, creating new moves to match the slamming dancehall rhythms coming out of the island's studios. In the last few years, he has created a slew of dances with self-explanatory names such as 'The Propeller' and the ultra-popular 'Pon Di River' that rock dancehalls from Kingston to Negril.

“I created all those dances at 'Hot Mondays' (an event held at Hagley Park Road in Kingston)”, says Hype “‘Hot Mondays’ ah my place, ah my house, ah my dancing school. I build it, I have been going there from it start when it was only five persons in the venue. That's where I create all my dances except the 'Drive By', I just listen to the rhythm, and my mind and body do the rest”.

To create more respect for the art of dancing in Jamaica he has also helped to form a core of 11 dancers, the Higher Level Squad, who all hail from the Lyndhurst Road, Dillon Avenue and Rousseau Road areas in Kingston.

Hype says he was greatly inspired by Bogle, “Bogle is my inspiration, we danced together, him teach mi certain t'ings 'bout dance and we go all over the place together until the tragedy of Willie Haggart*. Bogle taught me a thing at Asylum. He said, 'never hold the back page, always go up front, that is where everything is happening'.

‘A Night of Music & Dancing’ will also feature sounds by Sample Jack with KC, Lava and Slaughta alongside New Horizon, and Star Temple. It all goes down THIS Saturday, November 10th! But to get you HYPE for this sell off event, check out the videos below! For more information on John Hype go to: http://www.johnhype.com/ or www.myspace.com/john squad.

Until then -

Cleveland - Detroit Link Up! Dance or Die, Part 3!

Chat 'Bout Cleveland friend and supporter, Destiny and Cleveland's Dancehall Queen, Ms. Trini were among the featured dancers in the much anticipated dancehall event, "Dance or Die 3" in Detroit this past Saturday. For those of you who got some rest after Tony Matterhorn and made the trip up North, you know that dance was insane. If you happened to miss this bash, Destiny sent us a video and a few pics from the event.

How is the dancehall scene in Detroit, you ask? With Canada just a bridge away, Chicago and Cleveland not far behind, the scene in Detroit is bananas right now. Still not convinced? Check out the video sent to us by the American Dancehall Queen herself, Destiny.....

Represent!

Later for now,
