Bashment Review: Super Dee's Blue and White Affair

We at Chat ‘Bout Cleveland have (again) officially declared 2007 as the “Year of the Theme” as many of Cleveland’s Dancehall Celebrities came out to support Super Dee of the YHP Crew as he celebrated his birthnight with The 2nd Annual Blue & White Affair at Dailey’s Blue Mountain Inn. Although the bash began with a slow simmer, it quickly reached its boiling point as the crowd danced to BIG TUNES from New Horizon, Young Hawk, Star Temple, Organik Sound and or course, Youth Hi Power! Once again YHP did the damn thing with big tune after big tune all night long.

As Chat ‘Bout made an appearance at about 1am, we interested in seeing what the masses were wearing for this affair. Although it seemed many patrons opted for turquoise instead of blue, Chat ‘Bout will give you all a pass since it is in the blue family.

The man of the evening, Super Dee himself was looking Super Sexy and damn dapper in a Navy Blue pin-striped white shirt with a navy sweater vest and jeans. Other fashion standouts were the always on (fashion) time Designing Women Crew (sans their designer) with Tanya Classic on the feminine side rocking a strapless navy cocktail number complete with peep toe pumps and on the sexy side was Tammy Trendz a blue hot House of De’reon ensemble. Always best dressed for the occasion, Eye (Ocean Wave) shut the party down with a blue on blue tuxedo (yes, I said tuxedo, but can you say COUTURE?). On the less tailored trip were Courtney and the Canadian Crew bringing a fresh look to the dance wearing head to toe Ed Hardy, True Religion and Armani Exchange. Special mention to Pam (from the now debunked Big Family Crew) wearing the flapper style halter complete with fringe and topped off with palazzo pants – very, very, cute, gal!

Other dancehall celebs on hand to wish Super Dee a happy birthday were Brookfoot and Dae-Dae, Toronto Jay and Desmond, Maxine and the always so fly Andrien of The God Bless Crew, Maggie Untouchable, KC Platinum – flying solo, and of course, Mr. October – Makka B in the house to promote his H U G E dance featuring Tony Matterhorn coming October 26th.

Besides the fashion and the tunes, other big points of interest included the special guest dancer from NYC (I cannot call her name right now) who moshed up the dance with her sexy body and moves. She bad from she born Chat “Bout must say. Not to let the ladies have all the fun, Makka B, Blaka and Nikolai represented for the fellas as they rocked the dance with the Killa Swing all over the floor till the dance was done.

Big Up to Super Dee for throwing a great bash and modestly showing some love on the mike for all who supported him the last few years. Can’t wait to see you next year.

Trust me; if you missed this dance, you missed a lot…

Ciao!

6 days and Counting - Tony Matterhorn is coming!

What better way to bring in the fall Dancehall season with the much anticipated Bash from Makka B and the Uprising Crew featuring Tony Matterhorn and the Alliance Crew (Chat ‘Bout has been hearing a few peeps that Mavado will be in the place as well). Coming to Cleveland Friday, October 26th to (Where else?) the beautiful and spacious Club Center.

All of Cleveland’s premier sounds will be on hand for this event, Star Temple featuring Rickyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy Hype and CB, New Horizon with Curly, Monk and Larry, Lava Ranks from Sample Jack and of course the newly powered Organik Sound with Leisa Engel and DJ Chubby. Besides the music (what else is there?), the event also promotes a Dutty Wine contest we are sure will be a MUST SEE!

Chat ‘Bout happened to catch a few words from Mr. Mentally Ill during an interview with Leisa Engel (Caribbean Groove) as he proclaimed that he was more that ready to watch the styles of the Cleveland ladies for this big event. So, Cleveland gals, take a trip to Chicago, New York, or L.A. (if you have it like that), visit your friendly Saks or Nordstrom for your bashment wear or even call the designer/seamstress of your choice for your one of a kind ensemble, but BE READY! Remember, Tony Matterhorn (and we) are watching!!!!!!

To get you ready for the bash, check out a Live performance of Dutty Wine below.....

Bashment Review: Lava Ranks "School Girl Crush" Birthnight Bash: Pass or Fail?

It was all about Lava Ranks’ Birthnite bash last Saturday at Dailey’s Blue Mountain Inn. As this is becoming the year of the dancehall theme, Chat ‘Bout was glad to see a “School Girl Crush” dance since there hadn’t been one in a long while….

As Chat Bout entered the dance, we were greeted by the guest of honor, Principal Lava Ranks, sporting a suit and tie along with a group of plaid gals sporting the traditional school girl looks complete with backpacks and knee socks. (Did they read the blog and decide to STEP up to this theme?) We were pleased to see many partygoers out and about representing their school days with plaid skirts, ties and khaki all around.

Other celebs in the school yard included the God Bless Crew, The Untouchable Crew (sans Sharon), Blacka, The Designing Women Crew (still getting much love for their Labor Day Birthnite Bash), Toronto Jay alongside Desmond, Ms. Brandi from the CGP Crew, Ms. Trini and Destiny. Also in the place was The Big Man himself, Mr. Dailey.

All of Cleveland’s sounds came out to support this birthnight bash. Of course, New Horizon was on hand spinning a few tunes (was it me or were there more selectors behind the booth that people on the dancefloor?), Sample Jacks’ KC Platinum played a few tunes and lead the birthnight greetings to his fellow selector and told the crowd that Lava Ranks will soon be off the market as he announced his engagement to R & B female selector, DJ Juice. (Hmmmm, was that why the happy couple were on the party flyer?) The future Mrs. Ranks also blessed the crowd with an R & B set during the dance.

Getting their “A” in school house fashion included the cutie dressed as the tennis instructor, the cap and gown ensemble complete with the hot gal dotted dress underneath, Lady T in the tan plaid ensemble, the hot boy sporting the school boy vest and khakis, Jodi Untouchable showing how sexy a lavender school girl can be, the mother and daughter team rocking the high waist denim skinny jeans and jumpsuit, respectively, and the cutie in the peach House of Dereon frock.

Feeling Blue that you missed out on the (themed) fun? Get ready for Super Dee’s annual Blue and White Birthnight Bash on October 6th!

Keep up the good (fashion) work Cleveland! And……

Stay Bashy!

Three the Hard Way- A TRUE Red Carpet event!

There was no bigger finale to Summer 2007 than Three the Hard Way - The birthnite bash featuring Mr. Dailey, Tanya Classic and Tammy Trendz (Designing Women Crew) The bash featured a “new look” to the Inn, a host of Cleveland’s dancehall celebs, and great vibes! If you missed it, I am sure you heard about it, since this dance was N I C E !

As Chat ‘Bout entered the pre-bash dinner, we were taken back by the décor! The covered ceilings, lighting, tablecloths (with placemats!) made us immediately call a photographer to be on hand to capture the follow up bash.

The annual dinner featured a host of the family and friends of the trio. Attendees they were treated to fine Jamaican cuisine such as Jerk Chicken, Fish, and of course, rice and peas. For the American palette, there was roast beef, mac and cheese, chicken and of course, spaghetti on the menu.

In between the mingling and socializing, many guests took time to take in the look of Dailey’s as well as groove to the Sounds of New Horizon as they treated the crowd to smooth Reggae tunes.

As Three the Hard Way arrived they were all dressed in shades of copper and gold as well. Mr. Dailey traded in his traditional dark suit for a light color tan suit matching to coordinate his co-hosts. Tanya Classic donned a sequin trimmed cocktail number while, the always sultry Tammy Trendz wore a show stopping midriff bearing ensemble.

The dinner ended at about 11pm as some guests concluded the evening, while others left to change into more bashy attire. Some guests arrived at the bash earlier than usual to ensure their place in this sure to be ram event!

….Fast forward a few hours as we enter the sell off birthnite bash at an earlier than usual 1am. As expected, the parking lot, main street and all sides streets were packed! After finally finding a space - much farther than usual - we proceeded to the dance. Just as we were getting over the Celebrity Parking sign in front of the building (I wonder what we needed to park there?), were we equally taken back by the RED CARPET!

Once inside, many of the tables and chairs for the dinner were removed for the bash but the elegance of still remained as we continued to overhear how “nice” everything was at the party this year. The added touches like the Velvet Ropes and Champagne fountains in the V I P section definitely brought the dance to another level.

In true Designing Women fashion, the ladies took a break from the festivities to chance into more bash appropriate ensembles – Tanya in a classy but sassy gold trimmed halter jumpsuit and Tammy – oh my, you HAD to see it to believe it! An iridescent shorts jumpsuit with exaggerated train and high collar. I guess that is what the flyer meant by costumes designed by druewho? (The same Drue of The Designing Women Crew). Hence the name, designing women? knew? (To look up this designer go to,
www.druewho.blogster.com - check it out!)

Other dancehall celebs coming to wish a happy b-day to the trio were The Untouchable Crew, Maggie, Jody and Sharon (missed Maggie at the dinner, though), Eye (Ocean Wave), Blacka, Promoter Brokefoot, First Class, Toronto Jay, and a mega blast from the past – Mary Ann! (She had a party with Mr. Dailey and Tanya a few years ago)….

Selectors on hand to bear birthday greetings were Makka B, taking time from promoting his big bash in October to spin a host of R & B and Rap tunes to warm up the crowd, Sample Jacks’ Lava (sans KC Platinum), Rick Hype and CB from Star Temple, and Caribbean Groove’s Leisa Engel and DJ Chubby took a moment to wish birthday greetings to her fellow Virgos and of course, New Hoizon was on hand to conclude the evening with there array of dub plates and new tunes to keep the crowd moving to sunrise.

Before cutting their birthday cake (yes, there were three!), the trio was serenaded with a special birthday song from one of the partygoers. Still feeling festive at about 2am, Mr. Dailey took over the dance to thank everyone for their support and declared that the dance would go until sunrise!

At the end of the night, we were able to snag one of the Three the Hard Way keepsakes – a candle holder with the party theme and one for each of the hosts. I don’t know about you, but we can’t WAIT to see what this trio has planned for NEXT year!

Stay Bashy!

Check out these pics! In order of appearance: 1. Caribbean Groove's Leisa Engel heats up the place with some tunes, 2. Birthday Girls, Tanya and Tammy, 3. New Horizon took the dance until sunrise! 4. Some partygoers enjoying the vibes of the bash, 5. Tanya Classic cuts one (of three) of their birthday cakes, 6. Tanya with Makka B of Mega Force, promotes Tony Matterahn (October 26th), 7. Tammy Trendz and Tanya Classic of Designing Women Crew share a laugh, 8. DJ Chubby and Leisa Engel checking in, 9. Mr. Dailey thanks all supporters of the bash, 10& 11. Tammy and Tanya make there runway walk down the Red Carpet! (Trust us, we tried to get Mr. Dailey on the Red Carpet!)

Bashment Review: Leisa Engel's PAJAMA Style Birthnite Bash

Riding on the recent success of CGP’s sell-off boat ride, “Rock da Boat”, Leisa Engel gives Cleveland’s dancehall fans another great event with her birthnite Pajama Style Bash on August 24th at Caribbean Flavor. If you haven’t made it to 'Full Throttle Fridays’ at Caribbean Flavor and came out to support Ms. Engel for her birthnite, you were treated to some great tunes from DJ Chubby and guest sound, Young Hawk from New York.

SPECIAL NOTICE***
Since 2007 has been declared “The Year of the Theme”, Cleveland’s Dancehall promoters have had the scene in blazers, in pink and white, mixing and matching, (and who can forget the never-ending all white)? Promoters come with these themes to make a dance a little more interesting and, I feel, brings a better vibes to the dance.....

That being said, when a promoter decides to go against the norm and have a dance like, for example, “Pajama Style” then YES YOUR ARE TO DRESS ACCORDINGLY… Come on Cleveland, you have got to get with it (and not only at the all white Memorial Day Bash or the pink Valentine’s Day Dance). When you as decide to support a dance with your attendance, take it a little further and play along. You know how we do it, “What are you wearing?” or “Girl, I’m getting this made…” part of being a Dancehall Celebrity is being a Celebrity and being Red Carpet Ready (shameless plug). Just try it. You’ll see the dances would have better vibes. I’m just saying, how hard could it have been to participate and support Lisa Angel’s Pajama Party theme? Hmm straight to the closet, right? Except for those of us who sleep in the buff, you may have to think a little! And speaking of buff, big ups to the gentleman who wore his pajamas, that’s what I’m talking about, doing the damn THEME & THING!

Of the few and the proud who didn’t sleep on the theme (okay, I couldn’t help it). The Guest of honor wore a pink satin camisole trimmed in black lace with cuties capris. Following close behind, was Cleveland cutest proprietor, Mrs. Lulenine (sp?) with an eye catching red satin pajama ensemble. Also out to support Leisa Engel were of course her fam from WJCU radio, Maggie & the Untouchable Crew (cute jammies girl!), the Blaza Crew, the laid back Lady Spyder (Spyder Crew), The Bashment Crew, Metroplex Crew, Super Dee, Cat, Jo Jo, Mark Dragon from New York, Tammy Trendz and Tanya Classic of Designing Women (still on their promotional tour for their big birthnite bash with The Big Man, Mr., Dailey). Also in the building, First Class (the promoter, along with Makka B, behind the MUCH anticipated Tony Matterhorn in October). Ms. Brandy, the Zimbabwe Crew, Doug, Vinnie and Craig, (those African men can dance!)

Guest sound from NYC, Young Hawk was rocking the crowd NYC style to such big tunes like Sam Cooke “A change Gone Come” and moved it right along all night long until the Lisa & DJ Chubby took over and moshed up the place old school style just the way the Cleveland crowd likes it. The dance was in full groove and would have lasted even longer but ended in smoking fashion, courtesy of the city of Euclid….

****Although Chat ‘Bout is all about the positive side, we almost forgot to discuss the haters mentioned by the guest sound wishing bad vibes to Leisa’s bash…. Just two words - SELL OFF!

Keep it moving (U P !)

Ciao

Bashment Review: Wifey V. Matey Affair - No Competiiton!

Leave it to Superdee to bring another blazin’ bash! The Wifey Vs, Matey Affair on August 18th, proved to be a night of good vibes, great tunes and self realizations. The big tunes came and ruled the crowd all night from Super Dee and friends straight from the BRONX.

As the Wifeys wore white and the Mateys wore red, Chat ‘Bout was on hand to spot the Wifeys AND the Mateys at the dance. It was all about Tammy Trends of the Designing Women Crew as she represented with a custom t-shirt in full style: “Matey by Day” on the front and “Wifey by Nite” on the back (see pic below). Also on hand promoting their September 1st birthnite bash with Mr. Dailey was Tanya Classic sporting a white and red paisley strapless dress… (Hmm, is she saying that she is a wifey AND a matey?)

Other onlookers for the affair included, Serena of the now debanded Wow-Wow Crew (keep holding it down, Ma!), Nikolai (sans wife Tamika Untouchable - no need to advertise, can you say WIFE?!!!) Blaka, Brokefoot & brother Ritchie (rocking the latest latest True Religion Jeans - THANK YOU), Toronto Jay and Desmond… Selector Monk, looking 80’s fly in a RUN DMC – style DOOOKEY DOPE ROPE CHAIN – (Loved it!), Dia P, The Untouchable Crew, Maggie and Sharon, Cool Cool Kat looking dapper in a blazer & jeans.
Selectors on the scene included Star Temple’s CB & Ricky Hype, Makka B of Megga Force and the ever changing, ever transforming New Horizon Crew - who has more members than the Wu Tang Clan… maybe they should change their name from New Horizon to New Additions… just a suggestion. Sample Jack’s Lava and newlywed KC and Lady T were missing in action- oh well, everyone doesn’t have to advertise their status......

Okay, okay, back to the dance…

Its check out time and no, I don’t mean bye, I mean check out this… as the soundman rocked the latest tunes and the crowd finally began to vibe, Cleveland’s dancehall celebrities of course have to take action on the dance floor. As one dancehall celeb, Miss Skippity Skip, skipped to the tunes and was doing her thing, she accidentally drops her Heineken in the middle of the dancefloor only to backshot dip it low, picks it up, places it on the bar, orders another and gets back in her groove before the soundman can switch the tunes… Check Out that!…

Or let’s check out the honey that had soooo much fun modeling and dancing happened to slip, and recover by turning the malfunction into a new dance move that actually led her to dutty wuk all over the floor. Got to love ya for it ladies! Who says Beyonce is the only who to fall with grace? That’s what the dance is all about - having a good time no matter what the mishaps. Keep it coming Cleveland - the vibes haven't been this right for a loooonnnng time!

Till the next dance …

Three the Hardway - Coming to a Dancehall Near You! September 1st!!!!!

Damn! Is it that time of year again? Already? (It doesn’t seem that long ago, really....) Anywho, last year Chat'Bout Cleveland was of many, to attend the annual birthnite bash for the one, the only, MR. ALBERT DAILEY! Big Up Yourself! Without Dailey’s as the Mecca for the West Indian Community in Cleveland, who knows?

Okay, okay, back to the bash! Well, Mr. Dailey's birthnite bash remains one of the most anticipated parties of the year. We know that his LAbor Day Weekend Bash marks the farewell to summer and the greetings to fall. Well, this year, few things have changed. To bring even more fire to this event, there are a few additions to his annual dance. Mr. Dailey has teamed up with Tammy Trends and Tanya Classic of The Designing Women Crew to present “Three the Hard Way” Birthnite Bash. Hmmm, how does one get to have a party with the Big Man?.....It’s easy - it's as simple as being born (on the same day)!

A night called "Three the Hard Way" comes straight from the blaxploitation* film from the 70's. Sooooo, perhaps that's why “Are you Red Carpet Ready?” is much more of a statement than a question.

We will just have to see.

And trust, Chat 'Bout can't wait to see how this is going to go down.

See you at the bash.

Tattle Tale

*Blaxploitation is a film genre that emerged in the United States in the early 1970s when many exploitation films were made that targeted the urban African American audience; the word itself is a portmanteau of the words “black” and “exploitation.” Blaxploitation films starred primarily black actors, and were the first to feature soundtracks of funk and soul music. Although criticized by civil rights groups for their use of stereotypes, they addressed the great and newfound demand for Afrocentric entertainment, and were immensely popular among black audiences.

Anger Over Winner Spoils Dancehall Queen Competition

Red Label Wine International Dancehall Queen 2007 Maude "MoMo" Francato (seated), 26, of Quebec City Canada is flanked by her runners-up; 2nd Place; Kadian Reid (right), 23, of Montego Bay, and 3rd place, Angelina Battle, 20, of Boston.

A bottle-throwing incident marred the 11th staging of the Red Label Wine International Dancehall Queen competition on Saturday, forcing the promoters to rethink the format of future stagings of the event.

Sections of the large crowd which turned out to see the event at Pier One pelted the stage with liquor bottles after the judges announced 27 year-old Canadian Maude “MoMo” Francato as the winner, forcing contestants, organizers and patrons to run for cover.

"We definitely will have to resort to no bottles in the venue in order to prevent something like this happening in the future," said promoter Brian 'Big Head' Martin after the incident had subsided. "Once it happens once, it will happen again."

Martin expressed disappointment at what he said were the misguided actions of a minority of the audience, which succeeded in marring the event and scoffed at accusations by some patrons that they colluded with the judges to select Francato as the eventual winner.
"There were five different judges and it is unlikely that they would have colluded to fix the winner," said Martin. "Furthermore, the promoters have no hand in the judging of the girls and it would not serve our interest to preordain the winner."

This is not the first time the highly controversial event, known for its raw, sexually suggestive dance routines, has been marred by violence. In 2005, the audience reacted in similar manner, rejecting the judges' choice and eventually choosing the now deceased Shanique Taylor as the winner. Ironically, Francato, who hails from Quebec City in Canada, and describes herself as a professional dancer, was a crowd favorite from the beginning.

Unfazed by Saturday's violent episode, Francato was able to return to the stage to pose for pictures with her runners-up, second place Kadian Reid, 23, of King Street in Montego Bay and third place winner Angelina Battle, 20, of Boston in the USA.

Reid, who burst into tears after she was announced as the second place winner, subsequently erupted into an angry tirade, claiming that she should have worn the crown. "She can't even wine," Reid said of Francato.

However, the 27-year-old, who was entering the competition for the third time - placing second in 2004 and not placing in 2005 - said she was overjoyed at her win and felt it was deserved as she had put in a lot of hard work.

"There is no way to describe how I feel right now," she said. "I wanted it so badly." Francato, who won a $300,000 cash prize, said she would now use her position as Dancehall Queen to raise awareness in her hometown. Reid won $150,000 and Battle won $100,000.
The competition, which this year attracted a record 48 contestants from Europe and North America, including Austria, Germany and Estonia, kicked off shortly after midnight without incident.

The contestants, displaying skill and agility on current dance moves, including Raging Bull, Drop Dead and Dutty Wine to hits by Vybz Kartel, Beenie Man, Munga Honourable and Rihanna, were soon narrowed to a field of 20.

The 20 contestants then had a quick two-minute dance off, with five outstanding dancers emerging as crowd favorites. Reid's wild gyrations to Beenie Man's, ‘Cock It Up, Gal’ and Francato's fresh take on current dance captured the imagination of the crowd.

It was then down to the selected five contestants to out-dance each other, showing all levels of skills, bumflicking and head-top wining to the delight of the audience.

Bashment Review: Reggae Boyz Patrick's Birthnite Bash - 8.4.07

Dailey’s Blue Mountain Inn defended its title of the little bash that could Saturday night for Cleveland Reggae Boyz’ Patrick’s Birthnite bash. What started out to be an evening of redemption from Last Saturday’s bash (see August 1st post), unexpectedly turned a night of good vibes and even better tunes. Yes, the heat was on, but we are not talking room temps! (this time)….

At about 1am the small but mighty crowd was feeling the tunes provided by New Horizon (so many selectors, not enough dances) as hey blessed the party with some oldie but goodie tunes that kept the crowd moving. KC Platinum keep the grooves coming with a few Sample Jack dubs and the newest dancehall tunes.

Just as partygoers thought they had reached the highest point of the bash, along comes Organik Sound featuring Caribbean Groove’s duo, Leisa Engel and DJ Chubby. What????? In case you forgot how they burn up the place every Friday night at Caribbean Flavor, they came with a pure WHITE hotness that put me in the mind of the old days of The Big Family. Straight up, they did the damn thing – really. Kept the crowd moving and feeling completely satisfied with hot tune after hot tune. (Is this what we are in for at Leisa Engel’s Pajama Jam on August 24th?)

In the crowd, also having a good time were The Uprising Crew, The Designing Women Crew with Tanya Classic and Tammy Trendz - giving them a taste of what to expect for their big birthnight bash with Mr. Dailey (September 1st), Blacka, Serena (Wow Wow), Dancehall Queens Ms. Trini and Destiny (way to check that hater, Ms. Destiny! She’ll know next time, won’t she?), and Brandi of the CGP crew.

I was loving the vibes of the evening, all selectors were on their best behavior as they made sure to big up all the coming events and showed every promoter and sound much respect. But, isn’t that how it’s supposed to be?

Feeling the love,

Bashy

Stone Love - We told you it was going to be H O T !!!!!

It was definitely HOT like fire at The Club Center on Saturday. No, literally hot – I mean REAL hot. SO hot this reporter kind of lost track of a few things. Warning: Alcohol and Heat – BAD COMBINATION!!!!

Chat ‘Bout arrived to a jammed packed parking lot (and surrounding side streets) at a fashionable 2am. The bash was in full swing with the Star Temple playing classic favorites such as “Like a Virgin” and “I Will Survive”. As the heat took over the constantly growing crowd, the bash was quickly turning into “Sweatin’ to the Oldies” until the Sounds of New Horizon took over to move the sluggish, over heated crowd. Trust me, trying to keep sweat off a MAC face and not dancing too much to attract even more heat was NOT easy, but I was able to hear a few new dub plates and crowd favorites.

Chat ‘Bout was also able to spot a few more Dancehall Celebrities in the bash; The Untouchables, Maggie, Jodi and Ms. Sharon (looking so radiant), The God Bless Crew, The Blaze Crew, The Designing Women Crew (with Tanya Classic and Tammy Trends delivering a teaser for their Labor Day birthnight bash with Mr. Dailey), Dancehall Queen Alums, Ms. Destiny, Lady Spyda and Ms. Trini. Ms. Brandi in the cutesy cute hot gal dress, Ms. Sheri, Nicholai with his better half Tamika, Leisa Engel (88.7), Brightnite and his lovely wife, and of course, Blacka (word on the street it that his sell off bash at the Club Center is coming soon!)

A comparison to the last BIG bash at The Club Center? There isn’t any (does the same location count?) Not really, the ungodly heat killed (or should I say burned) any type of vibe at the dance. It was extremely difficult to really feel the tunes and cut loose if you have to stop and fan yourself, wipe your face or get some water! Speaking of water, THERE WASN’T ANY!!!! I guess the promoters figured if all they bring is Stone Love that is clearly enough. No air, no wine, no mixed drinks, Just Stone Love, some jerk Chicken and Hennessey – now THAT’S a bash!

Needless to say the bash had its potential – weren’t we all looking forward to it? But word to Cleveland’s Next Top Promoter- A great sound does not automatically make a good dance! Or does it?

Trying to stay cool,

Bashy

Congradulations to 2007 Midwest Dancehall Queen - Skittles!

As much as we like to be everywhere, with so many blazin’ events this summer, it is close to impossible. Chat ‘Bout Cleveland supporter, Destiny, gave us the scoop on the 3rd Annual Midwest Reggae Dancehall Queen Competition that went down July 7th……

Congratulations to Dancehall newcomer, Skittles. (above with 2006 DHQ Pochahantas). Second AND third place went a few DHQ’s from St. Louis (who knew?)

As a guest judge, Destiny received the red carpet treatment as she made her stunning appearance in a limo with the Nocturnal Crew from Detroit and Canada’s Dancehall Queen and Dutty Wine Champ, Simone.

The sound for the evening, Killa Face, gave Destiny as well as other dancehall celebrities in the house; including Chicago’s own Candi, Montana (chicagoreggae.com), and Midwest Dancehall Queen 2006 Pocahontas much respect as he played the latest dancehall tunes mixed in with his custom dubs specially selected for the evening.

The event was pure craziness from the beginning with a mix of dancehall vixens from Cleveland, Detroit (Blackberry and Empress), Canada and of course Chicago. The place was so jammed packed; immediate plans are in the works for a new venue for NEXT year’s competition (Cleveland, perhaps?).

Sounds like a great a event that I hope will continue year after year. To hold you until next year’s competition, here are a few pics sent us…

Ocean Wave - Giving Back to the Community!

Family, food and fun was the theme for Ocean Wave’s 1st Annual Caribbean Style Community Party held at Ocean Wave located at 12524 Kinsman Road. We say first since organizers promise that next year’s event will be an even bigger event as surrounding businesses will collaborate on future community projects.

Chat ‘Bout Cleveland was greeted with a slew of events including kids face painting, free hot dogs and hamburgers (served by Ocean Wave owner, Eye), slushies and a reggae jump around for the kids (donated by Mr. Dailey, who couldn’t attend, BUT we were able to support him as well at the Soul of Buckeye Festival).

It was a great event enjoyed by all who attended the all day festivities. The one thing missing? Y O U ! We would like to say we say a few Dancehall Regulars at this event, but during the time we were on site, we may have missed a few.

Couldn’t fit the Community Day into your schedule? Take time to stop by Ocean Waves and let them know you recognize their efforts in our community, inquire about future projects, buy a beef patties (or two), or treat yourself and sit in for an order of Sticky Chicken, Stew Beef or (my fav) Curry Goat, I am sure your support will be greatly appreciated as well…..

As we full heartedly enjoy the bashes throughout the year, let’s also take time to come out and support the community based events with our numbers as well. Since it is our commitment to keep you posted about the latest in all things affecting Cleveland’s Caribbean community, be mindful that we will always support community based events such as these.

With that in mind, as the Summer is in full swing, if there is ANY community service based events in which Chat ‘Bout Cleveland can assist, let us know!

Keep giving back,

Bashy

Bashment Review: More FIRE!!! Pure FIRE!!! FIRE LINKS BLAZES CLEVELAND at the Club Center!

Whew….. Please pardon me! I am just waking up in time to post this review (Yes, it was THAT off the hook!) I know we had said it before, but if you missed this bash…..Sorry for you! The Throne of the Dancehall was passed on to Unity Vibes & BrokeFoot. Reminiscent of the days of the Cotton Club and Dad’s Hall, the much anticipated bashment surpassed all expectations and brought out some of the best dancehall celebrities for the past and present.

As Chat Bout arrived at an early 1AM, the man of the evening BrokeFoot Fashionably welcomed his guests looking oh so haute (and extra sexy) in a tailored white blazer and signature shades, while brother Richie followed suit (pun intended) in a detailed shirt and True Religion Jeans. Is this setting the tone for being Red Carpet Ready?

The first sound for the evening, Star Temple hushed the crowd and carefully delivered the vibes by spinning big tunes such like, James Blout’s ‘Beautiful’ and Rihanna’s ‘Murderer’. Big Up to CB & Ricky Hype for setting the stage for the other selectors of the evening, New Horizon, Unity Vibes, Sample Jack and of course, FIRE LINKS.

Not one to miss a big event such as this , several Dancehall Celebrities in attendance included MAKKA B , the always flawless God Bless Crew, Nikolai and wife Kameika, The 116th Crew, BrigNite & his lovely wife (looking as beautiful as ever), The Uprising Crew, Reggae Boys, Hughie, First Class, A special Big Up to Kevin (Ricky Tan’s son), Pops, Indian (of D&K Restaurant), 2/3rds of the Designing Women Crew taking to the Red Carpet theme of the evening; Tammy Trends in a floor length number and Tanya Classic showing some leg in her sheer creation. (Hmmmm, I am so used to seeing three…..), Representing The Untouchable Crew was Ms. Maggie and Sharon (see you on the 30th!) and the always stylish Sherri looking to posh in a navy and white dress with killer pumps.

Blasts from the pasts included Ruby - haven’t seen her since Bag Family (and yes, she’s still flyyyyyyyy!!!) Making her (re) apparenace in with a bang wearing strapless navy linen top stitched baby doll top with the oh-my-Gucci-banging ass navy pumps…..

Can you tell everyone came in their Bashment Best?

Other fashion standouts; the cutie in the red blouse, denim pump pum shorts with the (clutch my pearls!!!) Betsy Johnson bag. Big up to the two ladies rocking the two hand crafted gowns, the hot mama in the bustier with the multi colored handkerchief skirt, but, the hands down cutie of the evening was the too hot for the dancehall momma in Michael Kors printed dress and wooden sandels! Whew! I CAN’T TAKE IT!!!!! Just when I thought I fashionably spent for the evening, my eyes rested upon the hottie in the white poet’s blouse and gold skinny pants, accented with gold & white jewelry alongside the style maven in the sexy white dress with the white peep toe sling back mary-janes. Can you say couture? (I told you we were watching!)

…Okay, okay, I am back , enough fashion, now back to the dance…..

Now if the vibes and the crowd didn’t get you, the dancing definitely was the final assault to your dancehall senses. As Firelinks began to play, the crowd grew from meek to mighty as the dance soon filled to capacity by a wee 3am. Fire Links blazed the crowd with big tune after tune and some of the hottest dub plates; the crowd was feeling the vibes and showed their appreciation by swaying and dancing to the beats. Back for another visit, the Detroit Cuties (no drinks, thanks) was on hand to walk out and showing their latest dancehall moves. But, not to be out done and representing C-Town, Ms. Trini and crew was taking over the dancefloor with her version of The Hot Fu*k and Dutty Wine. Obviously too much the dance floor, Ms. Trini and crew committed to the speakers as their dance props with a series of headstands and other dancehall favs that made her Cleveland’s dancehall Queen. Lady Spyda made her reemergence to the dancefloor (and speakers), by dancing her ass (or should we say hair?) off! These ladies were too hot for TV so we can’t wait to catch the DVD with Unity Vibes. A definite must see!

As Ms. Trini, Destiny, Lady Spyda and crew got the crowd hype and set the tone for the dance, The 2005 Dancehall Queen, Mad Michelle took to the floor and supplied the dance with the latest dances from Jamaica including the Hula Hoop and a few other dances that were even too new for Chat ‘Bout to identify.

Ahhhh, makes us remember the times……When people actually dressed up to come out and just had a good time. It brought a tear to Chat ‘Bout’s eyes as we made our exit at an early 5:30 AM with the sun rising and the sounds of the dance in the background as we headed to the parking lot.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! To all of the Dancehall patrons who came out and supported Unity Vibes and Brokefoot. RESPECT to the Mighty FIRE LINKS who came to Cleveland and MOSH UP the PLACE and brought nothing but FIRE back to the dancehall scene in Cleveland, but most importantly thank you for all for keeping the peace inside the dance with good vibes.

'Til the next time,

Ciao!

Bashment Review: 'Girls Gone Wild' in Columbus

Although some may have thought “Girls Gone Wild” dance at The Filipinas Center was a Columbus event, Cleveland was definitely representing at this bash!

Making a later than usual appearance at about 2:30 am, the party was in full effect vibing to the sounds of Cleveland’s own Star Temple and New Horizon. It was good to see a mix of the Cleveland crowd with the Columbus dancehall community. It was even better to see the dance still jumping after our 5am departure!

In the Columbus + Cleveland crowd representing C-Town was Ms. Maggie Untouchable and Crew, Tammy Trendz from Designing Women Crew and Makka B was on hand promoting his latest events, Jiggy Fridays and his 2 day Birthnight Extravaganza.

With the late arrival of Chat ‘Bout, we may have missed the promised dance contest, but some points of interest to the bash were the release of some new Dub Plates from New Horizon and Star Temple (is it me or is this the Summer of the Dub Plate? I don’t know, but as dancehall music lovers, we ALL win!)

As usual, Chat ‘Bout was on style watch as we spotted a few fashion stands outs of the evening. Big Ups to the cutie in the denim shirt dress and a Ohhh-Wee to the hot boy in the pinstriped blazer. Who knew Columbus people were so damn fly????

What would I like to see? More Columbus people out and about supporting Cleveland’s Dancehall and Reggae based events. From the upcoming Birthnight Bash of Sharon Untouchable to CGP’s “Rock the Boat”, there too many events to choose! Take your pick and see you in C-Town!

Keeping it Bashy,

Bashybloggette

Bashment Review: The 2nd Annual All White Affair

If The All White Affair on Sunday is an indication of what Summer 2007 has in store for dancehall lovers – then this will be a Summer to remember!

With a kickstart to a slow building bash, the party was in full swing by 1am. As the crowd was feeling the tunes of CB and Ricky Hype of Star Temple the great tunes kept coming from guest sounds of the evening, Mighty Young Hawk and YHP who entertained the masses with their latest dub plates and remixes. The selectors kept the party to a level of niceness until Leisa Engel and DJ Chubby brought the crowd to a white hot blaze with a (n i c e) mix of old and new dancehall tunes.

Chat ‘Bout looks forward to The All White Affair as it is always a treat to see everyone look so ‘pure’ in their all white ensembles. Of the sea of white there were a few fashion standouts including the cutie in the white hotpants suit and a few gals rocking various dress styles. Big up to the honey rocking the bohemian look complete with wood accents.

As usual, there were a the dancehall celebrities in the crowd including Maggie Untouchable (changing from mix and match to all white quite effortlessly). Our fave fashion icon Eye (real men wear ruffle collars and cuffs!), The Designing Women Crew, Dee, The Uprising Crew, Ms. Brandi and Pumpkin from the Caribbean Flavor Crew, KC Platinum – keeping a low profile, New Horizon was in the place demonstrating the latest dances from Jamaica, Ms. Onnie in the sexy halter top and Soldie.

Added attractions to the evening included giveaways to a few very specific ladies, as well as a photographer capturing the crowd along and a few very selected posed shots. Another highlight: the arrival of a few biker boys to the bash (the names are still a mystery, but NOT for long!)

As the night came to a predictable end at 3am, the resistant crowd remained on hand to hear a few more tunes from past and present. As the temperature rises this season, let hope the good vibes keep up as well!

Stay Bashy!

Chat 'Bout Cleveland's Promoter of the Month: Maggie Untouchable: Queen of the Dancehall!

Year after year and time after time, all you have to say is Maggie’s keeping a party and you know that you have to be there. No matter if you have considered yourself ‘retired’ from the dancehall scene, everyone in Cleveland (and beyond) make sure to not miss Ms. Maggie’s bash. These dances have become the most anticipated events of the year. With themes such as Army dance, Throwback jersey party and this years Mix and Match Bashment Party, this is definitely a bash guaranteed to SELL OFF! In anticipation of this event, Chat ‘bout Cleveland’s Bashy Bloggette took a few moments to talk with Ms. Maggie to find out how she brings on the bashes that makes us want to come back again and again……

Bashybloggette: First and foremost, Maggie, The Untouchable Crew is one of the most recognizable on Cleveland’s dancehall scene. Most crews are usually dubbed by a selector, where did you all get the name?

Maggie: My girlfriends and I got the name from the movie, ‘The Untouchables’

Bashybloggette: How did you begin to promote dances?

Maggie: I began having dances about 12 years ago. I started with my birthday bashes which grew to bigger dances that I keep a few times a year. Depending on my mood, I keep about 3-4 dances a year.

Bashybloggette: The theme of this dance is ‘Mix and Match’, how did you come up with this theme?

Maggie: People always ask me how I come up with my party themes. It’s just natural the way I come up with the themes. I kept the first ‘Mix and Match’ dance in 2003; I thought it would be a nice idea to have that dance again to promote the Spring and Summer colors.

Bashybloggette: What do you think about the dancehall scene in Cleveland? Do you feel we are as up to date as other cities such as Chicago and New York?

Maggie: Sometimes I think the scene has taken a turn for the worst. I think the Chicago scene is better than New York and of course we are not as current as some other cities, but I do feel that our scene is a definitely getting better…. We are getting better.

Bashybloggette: That being said, what about the fashion and music as it relates to the dancehall scene in Cleveland. People tend to say we are not as with the music and clothes, where do you stand on that?

Maggie: I notice that Cleveland people like to hear the old music again and again. We need to upgrade our music so when we have special guest selectors play we can relate and vibe to what they play instead of standing there looking around because we don’t know the tune or that dance. We need to upgrade!

Bashybloggette: Well, I must admit, I am one of those people who enjoy the old tunes, but I also keep current with the new as well. All in all, what do you think makes a great dance?

Maggie: The right sound system, the right vibe and a variety of people.

(..By the way, Maggie’s ‘Mix and Match’ Bashment Party will have sounds by New Horizon with Monk and Curly, Star Temple with Ricky Hype and CB, and Sample Jack with Lava….)

Bashybloggette: Over the years, who are some of the people you still enjoy seeing coming out to support you?

Maggie: I just love seeing a variety of people who come out to my dances. Jamaican people, American people, I really just enjoy seeing everyone come out and enjoy themselves.

Bashybloggette: Is there anything else you would like to add?

Maggie: I like to keep parties to have a good time myself as well as seeing all the people have a good time. Seeing everyone satisfied with the dances always makes me feel good.

See you all there! This Saturday, May 26th at Dailey’s Blue Mountain Inn! Be there in your Mix and Match Best!

Sell off! Buju - Madison Square Garden - A G A I N !

For all who love Buju (and who doesn't?) here is the latest on the star......

Gargamel Music, Inc. is extremely pleased to announce that Buju Banton sold out the Theater at Madison Square Garden this past Sunday May 6th. It was the third time Banton graced the world famous stage, playing to a capacity crowd of over 5,000 energetic patrons that included former New York Knick and Jamaican national Patrick Ewing.
Billed as a "Pre-Mother's Day Driver Concert," in recognition of Buju Banton's latest smash single "Driver A," the blockbuster event featured live performances by Jovi Rockwell, Khari Kill, Da'Ville, Lady Saw, Tony Matterhorn and Gargamel Music artist New Kidz, whose lively set included a brief lesson on the latest dance moves out of
Jamaica.
Banton and his Shiloh Band were in prime form, running gracefully through his diverse and extensive catalog of hits-old and new, keeping the audience on their feet the entire time. Climax came when Banton brought out dancehall legend Shabba Ranks, to perform a few songs for the amped up crowd. Indeed, it was a night to remember. Produced by veteran Caribbean radio personality Dahved Levy with partners GB God Bless and Don Grant of Roti Plus, the sold out show proved once more that Reggae music is not a niche and that artists the caliber Buju Banton not only deserve bigger and better venues, they can actually pack the house.

Star Temple Birthnight Bash - 5.5.07

What started out as a night of good vibes and great tunes quickly turned into a dancehall edition of (Bashment) Girlz Gone Wild!

As Chat ‘Bout made a more that fashionable entrance close to 2am, the dance was in full swing to the tunes of Ricky Hype and Star Temple. Joining in the birthnight celebration, KC Platinum made a cameo appearance and played a few tunes including the latest dub plates from Sample Jack
(Can you say - N I C E!!!!?)

Just as the dance reached its potential, the night’s special guests – straight from Detroit- made their way onto the scene. The honeys with the cute ‘fros and the hotpants made a great first impression on this reporter, but the fascination quickly faded amongst the lack of dancehall moves and clearly choreographed routines for some popular tunes. I can’t put my finger on it, but I sensed the trio lacked the bashy attitude and the ability to rule the dance floor that comes with the territory being a dancehall/bashment crew. I hope the little Ms. Cuties take a lesson from the styling our own Destiny and Ms. Trini or have a talk with Lady Spyda on how to rule the crowd and gain that dancehall respect as a dancehall queen/crew. With many years ahead for the young ladies, I suspect in time they will have the full finesse and attitude to match their fashion sense. But as of Saturday, unfortunately, let’s just say the crowd obviously had the same feeling as one partygoer (no names, please) proceeded to pour a drink onto one of the dancing Detroit Girlz as they demonstrated some of the latest dancehall moves.

Speaking of Destiny and Ms. Trini (who was on her BEST behavior), decided to represent C-Town with their own moves as the ladies took over the speakers, tables, chairs and anything else to show why they are Cleveland’s Dancehall Queens. Much props to Ms. Destiny and she avoided a nasty accident between her signature headstand and an uncooperative table. The headstands became a little more stable with a chair and the dance floor. Whew!

Also in the crowd for this night of high energy and dancing were Maggie Untouchable and crew (who still is looking for that Killer Mix and Match ensemble for her big dance in a few weeks), Onnie (rocking the latest from the House of De’Leon), Tammy Trendz with her crew, The Designing Women, King of the Dancehall – Blacka and Nicholi (sans Dylan, again), The Big Man himself, Mr. Dailey, making an appearance with an Anti Smoking message on the mike, and as I live and breath, my eyes were not playing tricks on me, but Lady Spyda made a laid back appearance onto the scene as well (It was definitely good to see you in the place, Lady!)

If this dance was a sign of things to come, I am definitely looking forward to the Dance-O-Rama THIS Friday at Caribbean Flavor!
